If you what you want from a holiday in America includes gambling; seeing the biggest names in show business perform on the biggest stages; being terrified by some of the world's most impressive roller coasters in between stuffing your face with bowls full of gourmet food at all you can eat buffets and wandering through the glamour and glitz of the world's flashiest and dashiest city, then come to Las Vegas, the crazy capital city of adult fun.
In this shimmering Nevada city you can win bigger and live larger than anywhere else you can think of. You can marry on a whim at a drive through chapel and have Elvis Presley perform the ceremony. In Las Vegas, you will find a place where every moment of every day has something to entertain and excite you. The city is not for the faint of heart, but away from the bright lights and clatter of slot machines, you can find a moment or two of peace and quiet in your room at one of the many excellent hotels and resorts that are increasingly attracting families and offer great facilities as well as areas where you can relax.
The city is surrounded by the alkali dust and sand of the expansive Nevada Desert, an empty space where you can escape from the clamour of Vegas into an area of outstanding natural beauty, where other worldly rock formations dot the open landscape, and where without warning the land disappears to reveal the majesty of the Grand Canyon. Las Vegas seems to exist on the fringes of reality, a place so over the top that it makes you feel as though in a movie, and where you are so buoyed up on the emotion of being a winner that when you hit the ground, and reality breaks into your dreams, the stark truth of the world is tempered by the fantasy architecture.
Las Vegas is America's playground, and it's a place where the American Dream is at its most obvious, the future can rest on the turn of one card, and if you want that kind of thrill, then it is without doubt the place to go. Las Vegas is a place that you will either love or hate, however, travelling to this glittering city, where one man's life can rest on the roll of a dice is perhaps as much of a cultural journey into the heart and mind of America as trawling round any number of museums and galleries.
