Self Drive Kauai

Although it's one of the smallest islands in the group, Kaui is arguably one of the most beautiful, and there is so much to see and do during your holiday on the island, that hiring a car and driving between attractions is an absolute must. Kaui may not be large enough to sustain a traditional touring holiday by road, but amongst the many things to see and do during your Hawaiian holiday, be sure to add the following to your itinerary:

The Na Pali Coast and the Waimea Canyon (also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific) are an easy drive from the hotels and resorts on the western coast, and provide plenty of hiking opportunities. Much of the scenery is instantly recognisable from films such as Jurassic Park.

The sandy expanse of Lumahai Beach on the western coast is sheltered from the trade winds by the mountains in the centre of the island. The beach is so large that it never feels packed, and offers some of the best sunbathing and surfing opportunities in Hawaii. Occasional bangs and shrieks will almost certainly have emanated from the Barking Sands Naval missile range, where weapons are often tested.
