Gateway to New England, and one of the most significant and impressive cities in the Eastern United States, Boston is in many ways the spiritual and intellectual home of the USA, but is also very much a modern and thriving place, where people come to relax and enjoy the present as much as to study the past.
Historically, Boston is regarded as the birthplace of the American Independence movement, and has been described as the Athens of the country, seat of learning for the nation's elite at Harvard, and a city with more than its fair share of Nobel Laureates walking the streets.
The reasons for visiting Boston, this most pleasant, and important city in the USA are as varied as the people who choose to come. Boston offers excellent shopping, particularly in the Back Bay area, where you can pick up some incredible tax free bargains on clothes and shoes; the city's nightlife too is a major draw, and amongst the many bars and nightclubs that you can visit, Cheers, the star of its own TV series in the 1980s is the most famous - although the liveliest bars tend to be around the University of Harvard in nearby Cambridge.
Boston positively resonates with history, particularly that of the birth of the American nation and spirit. It was here that the population began their rebellion against the British, and here that the revolution first took place. In many ways, given the influence that the USA has had across the rest of the globe, Boston is the home of modern democracy, and a city that revels in its heritage. Amongst the many impressive buildings on display, around the UNESCO protected Beacon Hill area, you can see the old statehouse, and a memorial, while on the waterfront, a replica of HMS Beaver - the tea clipper where the Boston Tea Party took place takes pride pf place.
As the main gateway to the states that make up New England, Boston is the best place from which to begin a tour of the forests and woodlands of America's northeast region in the fall. The stunning colours cast by trees preparing to shed their leaves each autumn provide a spectacular backdrop to enjoy, and draw visitors from all over the world in order to experience one of the most beautiful sights of nature in action that you can imagine. While during the summer, the resorts along the Cape Cod peninsula such as Martha's Vineyard are popular places to visit, and attract many people.
